I wouldn’t agree to “behind western media”, but certainly a lot is borrowed (appropriated, stolen?) and completely reworked according to a very different mentality. The power is not in the musical or vocal part of the performance, the power is in the intricate and subtle connotations of lyrics and the “between the lines” messages in the said lyrics. Transating them into any other language would be a thankless exercise, as a lot of background is required to relay the message, not just the accurate rendition of words. Not unlike “Bolywood music” - we cringe at it, but millions of “initiated” people all over the world absolutely loose themselves in it. Go figure…

@AdamH:

1. I believe the comments implied that they may be Bulgarian. But basically eastern block for sure. After that it, in my opinion, really doesn’t matter

2. Yeah, it’s basically the song of the musketeers from that particular movie. Which is soooo much better than the English version of the 3 Musketeers movie that it’s just stunning. Since they’re French after all, that would be why the French words are mixed into the song.

3. It’s a group called DDT — they are popular to date, but were hugely popular with the population during the latter USSR years. I’d say they’re a band of 1 or 2 generations back, but at the same time I listened to them when I was younger and like them now. So maybe it’s just a current and those who got to experience the 1990 life.

4. I can’t give you an exact date, but I would say the 80’s. When it comes to dance and effects, we tend to be behind western media in terms of what we consider modern, but the songs are good
